☣ ☣ PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY: Individuals with obesity are often excluded from clinical trials. ☣ ☣ 🙏🏽 THANKS Courtney Southwick, MS - Health Science Writer for your great article in HealthCentral Corporation. 💡 💡 MY TWO CENTS: WHY? 💊 Researchers might be disincentivized to include patients with obesity in their trials because of how their weight and weight-related health complications could affect the intervention 💊 Obesity is associated with over 200 complications, some of which may disqualify someone from participating in clinical trials. 💊 Weight bias, stigma, and discrimination likely play a big role. Even when individuals with obesity are eligible for a clinical trial, they might not be inclined to participate for a variety of reasons related to their disease. THE DANGER 🚨 This is a huge problem. 🚨 It’s challenging for clinicians to treat patients with obesity with certain medications if we don’t know which dose or frequency to prescribe. 🚨 Standard dosage and titration regimens could lead to underdosing or overdosing individuals with obesity. CALL TO ACTION 🙋🏽♀️ Raising awareness in a variety of ways is important. 🙋🏽♀️ Health care providers need to be armed with inclusive research, or knowledge of research limitations, so we can treat patients as effectively and safely as possible. 🙋🏽♀️ And patients need to be aware of these research limitations so they can advocate for themselves when medications do not seem to be working or when they develop potential side effects. Two of Intellihealth’s co-founders will be speaking at Columbia Cornell’s 2024 obesity course. Dr. Louis Aronne will speak at 10 a.m. EST on May 1. On Friday, May 3, Dr. Katherine Saunders will speak at 9:15 a.m. about “On-Label Pharmacological Approaches to Obesity” and then participate in a Q&A on pharmacotherapy with Dr. Tirissa Reid at 10:35 a.m. One of our clinical advisors, Dr. Ania Jastreboff, will speak at 11 a.m. on May 3 regarding “Nutrient-stimulated Hormone-based Medications for Treating Obesity: Sparks From the Pipeline.” This four-day obesity course provides an excellent overview of obesity medicine, focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, behavior change and complex case management. It is designed for all health professionals: physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and more. For physicians interested in obtaining obesity medicine certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM), this course satisfies the ABOM requirement of at least 30 hours of GROUP ONE credits on the topic of obesity.

Our co-founder, Katherine Saunders, MD, was on the selection committee for the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Mani L. Bhaumik Breakthrough of the Year Award. The prize is given to scientists whose work best exemplifies Science's Breakthrough of the Year. This year's award recognized the development of GLP-1 agonists to treat obesity —and their efficacy at blunting obesity-associated health problems. Bhaumik Breakthrough of the Year Award Ceremony. 🎉 Our selection committee (editor-in-chief, Dr. Holden Thorp, Dr. John Buse, Dr. Eric Topol, MD and I) chose Dr. Lotte Bjerre Knudsen and Dr. Richard DiMarchi as winners for their groundbreaking work in the development of #GLP-1 agonists to treat #obesity. Here are my #openingremarks from the #pressconference: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 🌎 As an obesity medicine physician passionate about democratizing access to the highest level of comprehensive medical obesity treatment (and one who has written thousands of GLP-1 prescriptions), I can tell you that Lotte and Richard's vision, dedication and perseverance have changed the world. 🏥 Obesity is one of the biggest health challenges of our lifetime, leading to over 200 weight-related health complications, billions of dollars in direct and indirect costs, and pervasive and harmful weight bias, stigma and discrimination. 💪🏽 Lotte and Richard's foresight and determination to (in Lotte's words) "do something much before other people think it is important" make them so unbelievably deserving of this tremendous honor. 💉 For individuals with obesity who have lost and gained weight a million times, who have been told over and over to just eat less and exercise more, and who have incorrectly blamed their inability to lose weight on willpower instead of dysregulated hormonal pathways, they finally have the tools to treat their disease effectively and sustainably. 😍 Thank you to Lotte and Richard for redirecting the conversation about obesity, for giving hope to every single person with the disease, and for changing the course of history.
